1. How should I look after my hair extensions ?

It is very easy to take care of clip-in hair extensions, and looking after them well will help to make sure they stay fresh and healthy-looking for as long as possible. Have a look at our hints and tips below for advice on how often to wash your extensions, and other treatments. Just like your own hair, the clip-in extensions will accumulate dust and dirt. However, there’s no need to wash them every day; in fact, clip-in extensions should be washed as rarely as possible.

We advise washing your extensions only when they start to feel ‘heavy’ or give off mild, unpleasant odours. If you wear your extensions all day, every day, wash them every 4-5 days at the most. In general, it’s best to wash them after every 10–20 wears. Before you apply any shampoo to your hair extensions, gently remove any knots or tangles. If the hair gets tangled during washing, use conditioner or a similar product to make combing easier. Always use a shampoo specifically formulated for delicate hair.

Wet your hair extensions under warm water. Squeeze a small amount of shampoo onto your fingers and then delicately massage it into the hair, always starting at the base of the hair and working downwards. Do not twist or rub the hair, and use as little shampoo as possible. After washing, rinse the extensions with warm water until the water runs clear. Careful rinsing is very important. To dry the hair extensions with a hairdryer, hang the wefts of hair from something, curl them onto hair rollers, and gently dry them with a hairdryer on the lowest possible setting.

2. Can I dye my hair extensions ?

You can dye your extensions, just like any other human hair! However, bear in mind that although your extensions are made of natural, human hair, it is technically dead hair. This means that it cannot regenerate, as living hair does. Any treatment that might damage your extensions, including dyeing, should be kept to a minimum.

If you dye your hair, make sure the product you use does not contain ammonia or oxidants (hydrogen peroxide), as these ingredients are much more damaging for your hair than natural products. Damaged hair extensions will be much less durable than ones kept in good condition. Never use any dyes or products containing bleach or oxidants (hydrogen peroxide). If they are misused they can burn or damage your own hair, and the hair in your extensions is even more vulnerable to these chemicals.

Oxidants, as well as over-drying hair, can also damage its structure and cause your extensions to get tangled more easily, as damaged hair cuticles start to hook together. This is why it is essential to choose your hair dyes carefully. Light blonde shades can only be achieved using products containing oxidants and ammonia which means that bleaching the hair is forbidden.
